HOURGLASS PLANT POT DIY TUTORIAL
Big plant pots are hard to find, especially on a budget. Sometimes you want one with a bit of height, so I came up with this quick DIY to make a double plant pot with an hourglass shape. Probably one of the easiest DIYs to date!
The success of this one depends on finding a good shape when doubled up - I spent some time going around the garden centres double stacking plant pots until I found some I was happy with the shape with. Mine were outdoors terracotta pots, so I needed a few extra steps compared to using two indoor plant pots. My pots were from Homebase and cost £10 each.
Here’s how to do it…
HOW-TO
My pots had been stored outside at the garden centre, so I gave them a clean down with just some washing up liquid to remove the grime.
On one of the pots, use masking tape or another, stronger tape to drainage hole from the outside. You won’t need to do this on an indoor pot. Whichever pot you tape up will be your top pot that you’ll put the soil in.
Next to attach the pots together in your hourglass shape. I used Gripfill as it’s quick and easy. Put it on one side and just sit the other pot on top for a few minutes until the instant grab has taken hold. I’d leave it to cure for a little longer before lifting the pot up just in case.
Next fill the drainage hole with a waterproof sealant, bathroom or kitchen will do. This will waterproof the pot and prevent water coming out the bottom when you water it. Leave it to dry.
I painted my pot in black to get the effect I wanted using some masonry paint tester pots. Paint the whole of the inside, or just below where the soil line will be if you’re feeling lazy like I was!
And there you go. Just plant up like normal and you’re all done.
With the two pots, adhesive, sealant and paint testers, the price for this pot came in under £30.
If you make this, be sure to post it on social and give me a tag, I’d love to see it!
