KITCHEN TRENDS 2021: STYLING IDEAS FOR MAGNET'S SOHO KITCHEN
This blog post is in paid partnership with Magnet Kitchens
At the end of last year, I took a trip to Manchester for a Covid-compliant photoshoot for Magnet Kitchens. They were shooting their new look books for 2021, and asked a panel of bloggers and stylists, including me, to offer up trend predictions for the coming year in some of their beautiful kitchen sets.
The other bloggers were Bianca from French For Pineapple, Stacey from The Design Sheppard and Joanne Hardcastle from Hardcastle Towers, so you can head to their blogs to see how they tackled the challenge!
I was given the Soho kitchen - a modern, slab-door style - in a muted blue-green Seagrass. It immediately sparked some ideas - I love how graphic the simple lines of this kitchen are - it makes it feel really modern, and I wanted to play around with the idea of geometry and shapes in what I pulled together for the space.
Here’s a look at my styling moodboard:
Styling this kitchen also got me thinking about my trend predictions for the coming year in style. A kitchen makeover is definitely on the cards for 2021 after all!
So here’s my pick for what’s going to be big in kitchens for 2021, especially if you share my sort of taste in interior design!
Organic forms
Kitchens tend to be quite linear spaces, so the trend for curvaceous, organic shapes is the perfect idea to introduce to soften the edges. Whether you go for irregular shapes like wobbly vases or pond mirrors, or arches and semicircles, mixing straights and curved lines is always a good idea to add interest to your scheme.
STYLING IDEAS
I really wanted to experiment with a mix of shapes to style the Soho Seagrass kitchen. With slab doors and rectangular handles, this gave me a background of really straight lines to build on. I wanted to use arches and tiers and the repeating motifs (unfortunately, some of my styling picks didn’t arrive quite in time though) to add a modern geometric feel that felt appropriate with the clean lines of the door fronts.
Earth shades
You know me, I’m all about the neutrals and any colours that feel relaxed and grounded. I can see this moving in the direction of earthy shades for 2021 and at the moment, I’m loving the dark tans, taupes, earthy oranges and khaki coming through in new homewares. These are great colours for warming up kitchen cabinetry with cooler hues, such as blues, greens and greys.
STYLING IDEAS
Styling the Seagrass colour, I used shades of taupe and brown to add warmth and create texture to the scheme, helping to add a grounded feel to the touches of brass, with rich khaki green as a detail accent that develops this colour palette.
Modern luxe
This trend is all about experimenting with textures such as marble, glass and brass to create a tactile environment with a luxurious finish. In the modern luxe kitchen, you need to pay attention to the details, down to the fittings and kitchen tech which should all be low-key, if not beautiful elements that add to the design. Often easier said than afforded to create the modern luxe look, but if you look in the right places, you can find some amazing bits that will really up the luxury look of your kitchen on a budget.
STYLING IDEAS
I was lucky to inherit some beautiful finishes in the Soho Seagrass kitchen set-up - a brass tap, handles and extractor unit, alongside beautiful marble-effect work surfaces. I think the key to styling a kitchen which does use these materials in abundance is to add contrast with other more earthy materials that ground them to stop the scheme becoming too ostentatious. I brought in wood, raffia, cane and other natural-influenced materials to create this balance that allow the luxurious materials to truly shine.
So, that’s where I place my bets for kitchen designs trends in 2021, and as I’ve been sat typing this up, I’ve been sketching some kitchen design ideas for my own home. It’s a long overdue renovation and I can’t wait to show you what I have in store for it!
