3 REASONS TO PICK MANGO WOOD FURNITURE
When it comes to materials for furnishings, I haven’t always paid much mind beyond ‘how good does this thing look’ – but I’ve been trying to take small steps in making better decisions with what I invest my money into in recent years. Interiors has seen a growth in fast, trend-led styles that come and go, and anything that means more consumption isn’t necessarily the best for the environment.
Beyond making more thoughtful purchases, I’m also trying to learn more about sustainability of the materials I’m buying into, so I can make better choices in this arena too. This lead to a conversation with the folks at J.N. Rusticus, who pride themselves on their sustainable ethos, about some of the materials they use.
One of the things that struck me particularly was about mango wood. I’ve always been drawn to materials made from mango wood - but it never actually occurred to me that this is actually the wood from a mango tree - I’m a bit slow, I know.
Anyway, once I’d learned a little bit about it, I thought it’d be good to pass on the knowledge, so here’s 3 v v good reasons why you should choose mango wood furniture.
IT’S SUSTAINABLE
Mango wood is a sustainable source of wood as it’s a by-product. The trees are native to India and East Asia, and they’re grown for the fruit. They take 15 years to mature, but older trees become barren, so farmers have to plant new trees every 7 to 15 years before they do. Only the older, less fruitful trees are chopped down for the mango wood, meaning it’s a really sustainable cycle.
IT’S VALUE FOR MONEY
Compared to the likes of oak, the availability of mango wood is much higher, which helps to drive the price down, meaning pieces made from mango wood can be surprisingly affordable despite the quality of the wood.
IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD
Let’s keep it real, I’ve chose a lot of mango wood furniture in the past with no knowledge about where it comes from and its potentially sustainable qualities - only because it has a cool, interesting wood grain that’s rich, deep and adds texture.
So know you now! Don’t forget to check out J.N. Rusticus for mango wood furniture and other sustainable designs.
